The sky is falling. Cats and dogs are living together. A pig just flew by. 3D Realms is releasing a Duke Nukem Forever trailer later today.
The game that's been in development for more than a decade, and become a running joke in the games industry (hell, the running joke) is getting it's first public showing in over 6 years.
3D Realms site is getting hammered right now, but details have been posted on Shacknews along with a screenshot from the game. Mind you, this doesn't mean the game is actually getting released any time soon, they showed trailers for it back in 1998 and 2001, and look where that got them.
As for that screenshot? It fills me with an overwhelming sense of “meh”. Honestly, they're screwed on this one. There's nothing they can release at this point that could justify the decade long development cycle that turned it into a joke.
For some perspective, here is a nice list of things that have been accomplished since DNF development first began. For example: The entire Grand Theft Auto series. All 12 games. Or, my favorite: “The two Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity were proposed, authorized, announced, designed, launched and successfully landed upon Mars where they have been exploring the surface for over 2.5 years.”
Still, I'll check out the trailer this afternoon. Should be good for a laugh if nothing else.
Update: Okay, I watched the trailer. 10 years to make what looks like a Doom 3 clone with bad voice acting? Yeah, that makes sense.
