Too Many RPGs!

I'm looking at the schedule of upcoming game releases, and it would seem we're going into RPG season. Dark Messiah Of Might And Magic comes out on Tuesday, Neverwinter Nights 2 comes out next Tuesday, and both Gothic 3 and Final Fantasy III for the DS come out two weeks after that. Sheesh, too many to pick from! I really don't have the time (nor inclination) to play all of them, so I really need to just pick one and skip the rest.

But which one?

I'll probably get FF III no matter what, the portable nature of the DS means I don't have to be tied to my computer desk in a dark room to play it, so it's more of a casual thing anyway.

As for the other three?

I've never played any of the Gothic series, but it looks really amazing. And Oblivion was the first of the Elder Scrolls series that I picked up, and that's become my golden standard to which all other RPGs are measured, so that's not necessarily a ding.

I was underwhelmed by the first Neverwinter Nights. While it was a solid game, it didn't nearly live up to the hype. Plus, NN2 development has been handed over from Bioware to Obsidian, who, frankly, did a terrible job with the previous Bioware sequel they developed: Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic 2. The screenshots I've seen of it haven't overly impressed me either.

I haven't played a Might & Magic game in years and years, but the latest one looks pretty good. Still, it's a Source engine licensee. While Half-Life 2 still stands as the best FPS ever, the games that have licensed it's Source engine have not been so good. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines was so buggy and slow as to be mostly unplayable, and Sin: Episodes was less buggy, but poorly put together and just not much fun. So that gives me hesitation when considering plopping down my money for another Source-based game.

*shrug* The more I think about it, I may just pass on all three. Or at least wait a bit to see how the reviews shape up. I'm in no hurry to tie myself down to another epic game anyway.

(Or maybe I'll make Jimmy happy and finally try World Of Warcraft. *laugh* Don't hold your breath though!)
