Buddhist Astrology

Just checking my horoscope for this month at Buddhist Astrology:

This month you are empty of planets but you have Uranus and Mercury running in opposition for 12 days and then Venus and Uranus for the next 12 days. I would focus on your wisdom and awareness. Although astrology may play a role in your daily activities, it only plays a role as an influence. Therefore focus on the center, your center of awareness. If you motivate well then all your life is an expression of your wisdom and compassion. If you are not focused and motivated, then life is chaos, even if you think you have it under control. Control is a big issue for Virgos. The source of control is your own mind.

Virgo Buddhists do things in an orderly manner. This month meditate on your personal clarity and motivation. If you are clear and clean in your mind and actions, then all else is secondary.

Now, first off… I’m not a big believer in astrology, I think it’s pretty much bunk. Especially the daily horoscopes like you see in the newspaper, those are complete and total nonsense. That said, knowing that human beings are creatures of habit, and settle into very cyclical behavior and mood cycles, I can accept that we not always be consciously aware of those oscillations. It could be argued that astrology just taps into those sub-surface waves and, through centuries of observation and documentation, recognizes those things on a more global scale than we do. I think claiming that the positions of the planets or stars, or any of that, has any effect on things is pure and total (to borrow Penn & Teller’s terminology) bullshit. I don’t buy it, never have and never will. Way too oogy-boogy (to borrow Adam Savage’s terminology) for me.

So, I read Rob Brezsny’s weekly horoscopes, with a grain of salt, and these monthly Buddhist horoscopes. Both (the monthly more so) provide a sort of 10,000 foot view of things, a general guide to the mental and emotional cycles of the world overall. Plus, they tend to give me topics to meditate on, especially the Buddhist ones. I’ll especially be taking some time this months to introspect on my motivations for things.

Looking back at last month’s:

This month you have the Sun, Mercury and Uranus all in opposition. That can mean distraction and agitation. There is also Mars running square to those planets. So all in all, relax, be peaceful and maintain a calm outlook. Around you things may seem hectic and busy, it is your responsibility to be a center of peace.

Virgo Buddhists do things in an orderly manner. This month be mindful of your enthusiasm, it could make too much work for you. If you manage the energy well then you will feel happy as the month closes.

It’s a pretty good summary of my month, overall. I was definitely over-enthusiastic last month, and got in over my head a bit, especially with the last-minute move. But, at the same time, there’s a great deal of satisfaction that came from having gotten so many of the things done that I had procrastinated on for far too long.
